The checklist below provides suggestions to help winterize your boat at season's end.

1. Review your Owner’s Manual

  • Ensure proper winterization per your manufacturer’s guidelines before starting.

2. Clean the Boat

  • Remove electronics, valuables, equipment, and personal items.
  • Wash the interior and exterior including drawers, storage areas, etc. with a manufacturer-approved soap and warm water.
  • Wipe down and dry completely to avoid deterioration and corrosion.
  • Prop cushions up for best circulation or remove them from the boat.

3. Inspect and Maintain the Hull

  • Run your hand across the hull to check for dings and damage that aren’t easily visible.
  • Apply a coat of manufacturer-approved wax to protect the aluminum (if applicable).
  • Inspect the transom and drain plug for integrity.

4. Winterize the Engine

  • Change the oil and oil filter.
  • Flush the cooling system with fresh water.
  • Add antifreeze to the engine (if applicable).
  • Inspect and replace fuel filters as needed.
  • Add a manufacturer-approved fuel stabilizer and fill the gas tank.

5. Battery Care

  • Is it time to replace your battery? If not, remove the battery, wipe it down, and clean the terminals.
  • Apply a manufacturer-approved protective coating.
  • Charge the battery fully before storing it someplace dry.

6. Gear and Sports Equipment

  • Clean gear (rods, reels, tackle) and sports equipment (wakeboards, tubes).
  • Inspect and wipe down personal floatation devices, flares, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment. Replace them if necessary.
  • Allow to dry completely and store all items in a moisture-resistant area.

7. Cover the Boat

  • Securely cover to prevent moisture from penetrating the boat.
  • Tie the cover down tightly to avoid wind ripping or blowing it off.

8. Drain Water Systems

  • Empty and dry live wells and any other water storage areas.
  • Open plugs and allow any remaining water to drain.

9. Check the Bilge

  • Clean and inspect the bilge pump to ensure it is functioning properly.

10. Final Inspection

  • Review your list and contact a local dealer regarding any repairs or maintenance that will be needed before you’re ready to hit the water next spring.
