Brunswick Expands, Refines Safety Recognition
Annual Worldwide Program Winners Announced;
Local Charities to Benefit at Plant Locations
LAKE FOREST, Ill., May 13, 2008 – Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC) announced today the recipients of its safety award program for 2007. Recently, the program was expanded and refined. It has been modified from a threshold-based criteria focused solely on the number of lost-time incidents, to a broader performance-based program encompassing additional data, metrics and other efforts that include Brunswick's comprehensive safety management system (SMS).
Brunswick believes this expansion will provide a better picture of the safety efforts and results among its various locations and employee groups. The overall purpose of the program, however, remains to encourage, recognize and reward employees and facilities that have achieved outstanding safety and health performance through promoting and practicing safety awareness, ultimately minimizing workplace incidents and injuries. All Brunswick manufacturing and distribution facilities worldwide are eligible for such recognition.
The program recognizes two major levels of awards. The Distinguished Safety Award is achieved by meeting specific safety performance results for the preceding year, which include incident rates and Brunswick SMS status. The Chairman's Safety Award is achieved by being selected by Brunswick senior management as the most outstanding performers for the preceding year.
Sixteen of Brunswick's more than 70 primary manufacturing and distribution facilities worldwide were named recipients of awards for their safety performance in 2007. Five facilities won the prestigious Chairman's Safety Award:
- US Marine, Cumberland, Md.;
- Sea Ray Boats, Palm Coast, Fla.;
- Lowe Boats, Lebanon, Mo.;
- Mercury Marine, Juarez; Mexico, and
- Mercury Racing, Fond du Lac, Wis.
Each of the Chairman's Safety Award recipients will receive a $5,000 grant from Brunswick, which will be donated to a local charity chosen by the plant.
There also were 11 facilities that received the Distinguished Safety Award:
- Sea Ray Riverview, Knoxville, Tenn.;
- Sea Ray Tellico, Vonore, Tenn.;
- Sea Ray Product Development and Engineering, Merritt Island, Fla.;
- Sea Ray Merritt Island, Merritt Island, Fla.;
- Boston Whaler, Edgewater, Fla.;
- US Marine, Reynosa, Mexico;
- Mercury Distribution Centers worldwide;
- Mercury Gears and Shafts Plant 4, Fond du Lac, Wis.;
- Mercury Outboard Assembly and Machining Plant 15, Fond du Lac, Wis.;
- Co-winners Mercury R&D and Testing Plant 12, Fond du Lac, Wis., and Plant 33, Osh Kosh, Wis.; and
- Mercury Outboard Assembly and Paint Plant 58, Suzhou, China.
Brunswick currently has seven manufacturing facilities that have worked more than one million hours without a lost-time accident. Included in that total is the Palm Coast Sea Ray plant, which has logged more than three million hours.
“At Brunswick, we believe it is everyone's responsibility to contribute to safety in the workplace. I'm very pleased with our employees' commitment to our high safety standards and congratulate these 16 facilities on their tremendous accomplishments for 2007,” said Brunswick Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dustan E. McCoy.
